2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Translated into English by Henning Koch
A Man Called Ove was a real sleeper hit.
Fredrik Backman was a quiet Swedish blogger and writer who had trouble getting publishers interested in his debut novel about a curmudgeonly man who wants to die (they said it had “no commercial potential”).
Ten years later, the English translation has spent nearly a full year on the New York Times Best Seller list, a Swedish film adaptation was released in 2015, and now a major Hollywood adaptation is one of the most anticipated books to movies in 2023.

The Marsh King’s Daughter has languished in “development hell” (even the IMDB page says as much!) for years, but finally –finally! – it’s one of the books becoming movies in 2023.
Breaking free of its troubled beginnings with a new director (Neil Burger) and re-cast stars (Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn), the project got off the ground and is due to be released via Prime Video later this year.
It’s a fascinating psychological thriller about a young woman who must reckon with her past after her father – who abducted her mother and held her captive for years – is released from prison.

David Lowery is tackling Disney’s 1953 animated film Peter Pan, which (in turn) was an adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan.

A Little White Lie, the upcoming Kate Hudson movie, hasn’t been widely publicized as an adaptation – but it is!
The story is based on the 2013 novel by Chris Belden, originally called Shriver.
The premise is a cracker, too: a handyman (played by Michael Shannon) is mistaken for a famously reclusive author of the same name and decides to simply go along with it.

Katherine Center is one of our favorite authors for rom-coms with happy endings that aren’t all fluff.
You can imagine our excitement, then, for romance books to movies in 2023, Happiness for Beginners made the cut. Even better, Helen – our MC – is played by Ellie Semper.
Newly divorced Helen is overcoming childhood trauma, including an incident that tore apart her family; she also blames herself. Her life is just falling apart.
Heading to a survival hiking course, she runs into her brother’s friend, Jake – where you watch the inevitable romance starting to build.
However, Helen is off to a rough start. You wonder if she will, indeed, survive. For movies featuring hiking full of love and redemption, we enjoyed this one upon its summer 2023 release.
