1. The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante

Book translated into English by Ann Goldstein

One of our most-anticipated books becoming a TV series in 2023, The Lying Life Of Adults by Elena Ferrante seems quite promising.

After HBO produced a critically-acclaimed miniseries adaptation of Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels, Netflix was quick to snap up the rights to her 2019 novel, which Goldstein translated into English in 2020.

Fans of the HBO series are sure to enjoy this new take on Ferrante’s work, as it is similarly set (and filmed) in Naples and follows a young woman coming-of-age in a turbulent time of political and social upheaval.

The Netflix series went live on 4 January 2023, so you can dive in straight away.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman book cover with man walking away with back to read wearing a hat, gray slacks, and blue coatPin

2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Translated into English by Henning Koch

A Man Called Ove was a real sleeper hit.

Fredrik Backman was a quiet Swedish blogger and writer who had trouble getting publishers interested in his debut novel about a curmudgeonly man who wants to die (they said it had “no commercial potential”).

Ten years later, the English translation has spent nearly a full year on the New York Times Best Seller list, a Swedish film adaptation was released in 2015, and now a major Hollywood adaptation is one of the most anticipated books to movies in 2023.

Renamed for an English-speaking audience, A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks, and opened wide on New Year’s Day.

You can find A Man Called Ove on our books about friendship as well as sad books reading lists.

It’s also a great read if you are looking for books with middle-aged characters.

3. Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

One of the most hotly-anticipated books turning into movies in 2023, Daisy Jones & The Six is perfect if you enjoy books about musicians and California-set books.

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s sixth novel was a major bestseller and a #Bookstagram darling, topping most summer reading lists in 2019.

Fans were swept away in the story – styled as a Behind The Music-style transcript – of a 1970s rock’n’roll band and the rocky relationships that inspired their biggest hits.

Reese Witherspoon was such a big fan, she jumped at the chance to work on the screen adaptation with her production company Hello Sunshine.

Check out the trailer on her book club’s Instagram page – the Amazon Prime series will debut on 3 March 2023.

Salem's Lot by Stephen KingPin

4. Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

Not a surprise for books being turned into movies in 2023 is Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot.

The 1975 horror novel was only the second that King published – back before he’d made himself a household name as the prolific King of Horror – but it still has a dedicated fanbase who have been clamoring for a new adaptation.

It’s been a long-term project for director Gary Dauberman, who first spoke publicly about his dream to bring the story to the screen back in 2019.

The forecast release date of 21 April 2023 was pushed back, due to conflicts and COVID-related delays in post-production, but die-hard horror fans still hope to see the film before the end of the year.

Dracula by Bram Stoker black book cover with red bloodPin

6. Dracula by Bram Stoker

Did you ever wonder why some books seem to be made into movies again and again?

It has a lot to do with copyright and the point at which stories enter the public domain.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula was protected by copyright until fifty years after the author’s death. That clock ran out in 1962, so filmmakers have been free to use his work for over sixty years now.

They’re finding ever more inventive ways to do it, too.

For instance, The Last Voyage Of The Demeter takes just one chapter from Dracula – the Captain’s Log – about the doomed ship chartered to carry the vampire’s cargo from Carpathia to London.

It’s certainly one of the most creative books to movies in 2023!

Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie book cover with dark night and orange pumpkinPin

7. Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie

For books becoming movies in 2023, Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot fans can rejoice!

The bad news is that you’ll have to wait until 15 September 2023 for A Haunting In Venice to be released in theaters, so here’s hoping those months fly by.

It’s an adaptation of Christie’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party, where her beloved detective is called in on the case of a girl who claims she witnessed a murder – also having been murdered herself.

Kenneth Branagh will resume the role of Hercule Poirot, having played the detective in previous adaptations of Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile.

Dune by Frank Herbert book cover with red-orange and yellow-brown illustrated dunesPin

8. Dune by Frank Herbert

Frank Herbert’s Dune is a doorstop of a book, so it’s not surprising that this adaptation has had to come in two parts.

Dune: Part One was a box office smash in 2021, so the follow-up is going to be one of the most hotly anticipated books to movies in 2023.

The second film is going to cover (at least roughly) the second half of the book, the continuing journey of Paul Atreides as he seeks vengeance for his family.

Like the book, the film will focus on the choice between love and duty, and the responsibility for the fate of the universe.

The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes by Suzanne Collins book cover with green and black spiral and golden colored bird at the centerPin

9. The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes by Suzanne Collins

If the original Hunger Games franchise is anything to go by, The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes is going to be one of the best books being made into movies in 2023.

The adaptations of Suzanne Collins’s dystopian series were blockbuster hits – and critically acclaimed to boot – with incredible production values and a fantastic cast.

This prequel is set to have the same, with Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, and both Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage in supporting roles.

The one-minute teaser trailer has whetted our appetites for now, but the full-length film won’t be released until 17 November 2023.

This time, it’s in the form of a prequel revolving around the world’s most famous fictional chocolatier.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker book cover with purple and pink geometric patterns and icons like envelopes and branches with leavesPin

11. The Color Purple by Alice Walker

One of the most iconic Southern books turning into movies in 2023 is The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

Of course, a brilliant film adaptation already exists – directed by Stephen Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg in her break-out role.

But this version is something different, something special, bringing the musical stage production to the screen.

Spielberg is one of its producers, as is Oprah Winfrey (who also starred in his 1985 film), and they’ll ensure that the new film remains true to Walker’s story of black girlhood in the American South.

The novel topped “best of” book lists around the world in 2022, being both a #1 New York Times Best Seller and a Goodreads Choice Award winner.

Readers responded to Garmus’s story about a female scientist (turned cooking TV show personality) fighting sexism and recruiting women of the ‘60s to her cause.

Not to mention that Six-Thirty became one of the new favorite dogs in literary fiction.

Capitalizing on the book’s popularity and momentum, Apple TV+ jumped on the rights and got into production right away.

Translated into English by Ken Liu

Die-hard science fiction fans (and more than a few “real” scientists too) will recognize The Three-Body Problem as one of the most exciting books becoming a TV series in 2023.

After a much-delayed film project hit the skids, readers rejoiced to hear that Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning novel was being given the Netflix treatment sooner rather than later.

The diverse cast includes Eiza González, Chinese actress Tsai Chin, and Game Of Thrones alumni John Bradley and Liam Cunningham.

What’s more, The Three-Body Problem is the first of a trilogy, so the series may play out over years to come if it’s as successful as projected.

The Power by Naomi Alderman book cover with black handprint and leaves in fingers on orange backgroundPin

17. The Power by Naomi Alderman

Fans of feminist dystopias, like The Handmaid’s Tale and Red Clocks, are eagerly awaiting the upcoming adaptation of The Power.

The premise of Naomi Alderman’s bestselling novel seems made for the screen: teenage girls developing the ability to release electric shocks from their bodies, forever shifting the power dynamics between the sexes.

With the state of reproductive healthcare access (in the U.S. and around the world), many of these books being made into movies in 2023 seem especially auspicious.

Aside from hard-hitting social commentary, we can expect high-quality special effects and powerful performances from Toni Collette, Auliʻi Cravalho, and Halle Bush.

Laura Dave’s mystery about a woman seeking the truth about her husband’s disappearance and the note he managed to smuggle to her before he vanished captured readers’ attention.

Dave adapted the screenplay herself, and Apple TV+ secured Jennifer Garner to star as Hannah, the woman at the heart of the story.

They’ve yet to confirm an official release date, but we can expect it to hit Apple’s TV+ platform towards the end of this year.

Renamed Knock At The Cabin, the adaptation will star Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ben Aldridge, and Jonathan Groff.

Murderinos, listen up!

Evidence Of Love is one of the most fascinating true crime books turning into movies in 2023.

It’s been given the more gripping title of Love And Death, and it’s set to premiere later this year on HBO Max.

Screenwriter veteran David E. Kelley has taken the terrifying true story of Candy Montgomery – who was accused of murdering her friend Betty Gore with an ax in 1980 – and turned it into a must-watch crime drama for the prestige platform.

If that sounds familiar, it might be because a similar book-to-movie adaptation, Candy, came out last year.

It wouldn’t be a list of books to movies in 2023 without an honest-to-goodness reboot.

David Lowery is tackling Disney’s 1953 animated film Peter Pan, which (in turn) was an adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan.

This version – given the expanded title Peter Pan & Wendy – will be live-action with the leading roles played by Alexander Molony in his film debut, and rising star Ever Anderson.

Fans are nervous, though, because the script has been worked over for years and gone through multiple drafts.

Lowery has repeatedly emphasized that “the number-one priority is getting the script right,” which is never a good sign.
