  • Was this book hard for you to read? If so, why?
  • How many stars would you give Wild Dark Shore, & why?

Let’s Talk Characters (May 30)

  • What did you think happened to Hank before we find out the truth? Do you think Rowan knew all along but blocked the clues from her mind?
  • Why is anger such a prominent theme among the characters? Is it resolved?
  • What is the symbolism of the seeds & Orly’s knowledge and storytelling about them?
  • Rowan almost feels like Fraulein Maria or Mary Poppins with the Salt kids while also struggling with ideas of motherhood. Do you empathize with her? Is she just as selfish as Hank? Did you struggle with her likability? And, how do you feel about her ending?
  • How do you feel about Dom? Also, I didn’t personally feel the chemistry between Rowan and Dom. Did you?
  • Which character would you least want to be stuck with during a crisis on the island? And, the most?
  • Who is your favorite character?
  • Who do you think will most adapt to life beyond this isolated island? What will become of them all?
  • Secrets, self-destruction, selfishness, and lying add to the conflict. What did you think was entirely avoidable? What frustrated you?
  • What would you choose to protect at the end of the world?
  • What one seed would you save?

How About That Setting? (May 31)

  • How did the setting shape the story for you?
  • Have you read other books set in or near Antarctica? If so, how did they compare, and how did the setting play a role?
  • If you were writing a review of Shearwater Island itself, what would it say?
  • Would you want to live on the island before water consumes it?
  • If you were stranded on Shearwater Island, what skill would you contribute to the group?
  • What do you fear for our climate in the future, and do you think Hank and Rowan were partially correct in saying we will starve, drown, or burn?
  • Did the seeds inspire you in any way, especially during veggie garden season right now in the U.S.? Are you inspired for the future?
  • Did this book change or reinforce anything about how you think about your own home, family, or sense of place?
